Barcelona´s hottest and nottest places to study

posted by Cai Jia @ 8:14pm, Sunday 31 January 2010.

For other apartment claustrophobics facing the final week of TEFL, a quick run down of some places tried and tested:

  1. Miro Library - From both the name and the glimpses of books from the exterior, one might assume this is the perfect spot for the studious - if only there were fewer ramps and more doors. I have yet to find an entry point. 1 star
  2. Domed atrium of MNAC - Steeped in 1000(?) years of Catalan history with a breathtaking sunset view over the whole city, what could provide a more romantic setting for you and your notes on the past tense to come together? Beware however, the deep seated leather sofas have been known to trap many an unsuspecting visitor, and before you know it you may find yourself being prodded unhospitably by a stern suited man shouting, "No esleeping!". Do see the art though. 2 stars.
  3. Labyrinth Park of Horta - If you navigate past the unsignposted motorway, pay the fee and follow the winding path you may stumble upon a luxuriant labyrinth where many a beer has been consumed. Overlooking the maze further perilous distractions lie - a host of North Americans revel, their voices crazed and movements alluring. If you have the power though to avert your eyes from their reenactment of "You´re The One That I Want" from Grease, you will find stairs leading to a pool of reflection, a quiet bath of Roman proportions. Here watched only by statues and swans is a perfect Eden of repose where you and your auxilliary verbs may unite. A little chilly in January though. 3 stars.
  4. Mcdonalds - A notoriously classy establishment shrouded in a haze of trans fats, the hungry TEFL traveller can still find herself drawn to the golden arches in a moment of weakness. Having surrendered to the call of my stomach, a few euros seemed a small price to pay for several hamburguesas con queso, ample lighting, and surprisingly, Britpop. Here under the stare of teenage couples, tourists and a solitary man licking a ketchup box I found a suitably impersonal atmosphere to actually sit down and tackle the future tense. The best yet - sorry Barcelona, culture, art and history. 4 stars
  5. Oh and of course last but not least who could forget the 4th floor of Escola Meditterani. 5 stars.

(Please can I pass the exam now?)
