Operation TEFL

I just finished my TEFL course here in Barcelona and I must say it
was not a disappointment. To be honest, I am at a point of
transition in my life, coming from a primarily military background
and looking to start anew as a civilian. Having no formal
education, I was a bit worried about finding work, especially in
France, when a friend suggested teaching English. I thought
about going straight into the field without taking this course, but
would have felt a bit guilty teaching without really knowing what I
am doing (other than the ability to speak English). I have to
say now, that the class was everything that I could have hoped for,
not only did I learn things about my own language that I was
unaware of, but I feel confident as a teacher. I now have an
idea of what to expect and how to go about running a proper, well
structured lesson. I even found that I may truly enjoy
teaching. So for something that I just wanted to do to get me
on my feet coming out of the service, I may have found something
that I actually enjoy doing for some time to come. Also, this
is definitely work that I can do at my own pace, so running a
business and going to school at the same time is totally within
reason. Overall, very glad I did the course, and happy to
have the class that I did. Great classmates, AWESOME
teachers, and Barcelona is a fun city to explore. Thank you
Lisa, Jane, Jamie, Suzanne, and Micheal. Hope to see all of
you again, and also to all of my classmates, if you ever find
yourself in Marseille, you will have a friend waiting for
you. Biz a tous.
Instructional Video

Ok, so we have one week left on the course and I still have a
lot to learn and sort out in my head, but I really am having such a
great time and such a wonderful experience.

I have attached this link for my American friends on the
course so that they can really know what me, Jane, Jamie and Lisa
and all the other native English Speakers mean when they talk
politely. Let this be your guide!

When the course is over I plan on making an instructional
video with Joy called at home with English based on the video
below.

The sugar jacket

Oh, hello. It's another beautiful day in Barcelona and I'm writing
this from a cafe overlooking La Sagrada Familia. It's surreal that
just over a month ago I was working a 9-5 job in small town America
and now I'm here.

If you're reading this and thinking of doing the course-DO IT!
I thought I would never be able to recapture the amazing time I had
when I studied abroad in college, but this course is a happy
surprise and I'm having a great time . I've met some amazing people
and I'm feeling completely prepared to go out and teach even after
only two weeks or so.

To all my classmates- We've had some long days and some
even longer nights, but since you are all very funny people I
thought I'd share some ideas I had for lightening up the classroom.
Pronunciation can be frustrating for students at times and I'm sure
being corrected can be disheartening. It might be fun to play
videos of Spanish comedians making common pronunciation mistakes
and have the class correct them together.

Gloria from Modern Family for
example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKwOoRd5tHk

(I know she's Columbian, but I love the show!)

That's all for now,

Songs... etc

Its my third day on the TEFL course and I am exhausted and excited,
I feel like my brain will explode from all the new things it has
learnt in the past two days and I have a headache, but a good
headache from my brain being used so much! It all seems to be going
so quickly which is a good sign, because that must mean I am
enjoying myself.

Tomorrow is my first teaching practise dun dun duuuuuuuun! and
I feel ok about it, but I'll have to see what happens tomorrow, if
I get nervous I might have to have a large gin and tonic with Wess
at lunchtime!

It has been annoying me all day I couldn't come up with any
songs in class, so here are two songs in the Present Perfect... I
think??? :)

<a href=

and here is my most favourite teaching song, which I hope to
use in a class one day.

Learning to Learn

As a new teacher-in-training in this month's TEFL course, I've
spent the majority of the past three weeks in class learning
grammar, phonetics, teaching methods and techniques and other
teacher-related things.

The first half of class every day is dedicated to the above
mentioned topics. We have been reviewing grammar tenses (Do YOU
know how to construct a past perfect continuous sentence?), rules,
and parts of speech (thank goodness for School House Rock), as well
as how to spell words in phonemic script, which is to say how to
spell a word using the pronunciation symbols you find in a
dictionary (Do YOU know how to write in /fəˈni:mɪk/ script?). Those lessons are then
paired with how to teach them. We learn teaching methods, learning
techniques, exercises, and even some games (I ROCK at grammar
battleship).

This part of the course is really important. If
not only for the sake that I should know the crap that I am
supposedly teaching to other people, but moreover to learn how
other people learn. When the trainers are going over grammar
points, I not only take notes on the grammar lesson but I also take
notes on how they are teaching it to me. What did they write
on the board? What did they say aloud? What did they emphasize?
What helped me to remember that rule? What questions did my
classmates ask? All of these, although not explicitly said by the
trainers in the course, are important to consider because in a few
short weeks, that's going to be me, and it won't be enough to
simply know that in English, we add an auxiliary verb form of 'do'
when forming a question. I will also have to know why and
how to teach it to someone.

So the class is actually quite exhausting because
I am simultaneously learning things for myself and for others. And
although we do have parts of the class when the trainers explicitly
talk to us about various teaching methods and exercises or games
that work well in the classroom, I think these other grammar and
phonetics lessons which may seem dull are just as informative and
useful. So yes, I will continue to be the nerd in the class
constantly nodding my head and furiously scribbling in my
notebook.

Knowledge is power, after all.

Japan, the first few months: some perspective

I’m scribbling this on the back of my
Japanese bank agreement, waiting at the Hoshikawa station for the
mass exodus of commuters to switch to the express sardine car to
save three minutes on their morning journey.

Another 12 hour day ahead of me and I
couldn’t be happier. Every week, I teach
11 different groups of 30 university students with mixed abilities
and motivations. It’s not just one of the
most challenging jobs I’ve ever had; it’s also one of
the most rewarding, especially when I finally succeeded in getting
most of my students to pronounce the two distinct sounds of
“sink” and “think” or participate without
being nagged or the rare occasion when that particularly shy
student gave me a gift bag of tea and cookies.

Nearly two months into my four and a half
month stint in Yokohama, I have yet to do much but
work. My language skills are still minimal; I
haven’t seen any big tourist attractions or even visited
Tokyo yet. I have managed to sing karaoke a few times –how
could I resist?—and enjoy the all-you-can-eat and drink
offers at a few izakaya’s (what you probably think of as a
traditional Japanese bar with low wooden tables and mellow amber
light.) I knew I wasn’t coming here for a
party, though, so none of this is disappointing to
me.

I’ve also been reminded of how daunting
moving to a new foreign city can be. I’d
been in Barcelona for over 5 year before I came here and I’d
been growing in complacency and comfort with my network of
contacts, cozy apartment and very little language barriers for
daily interactions. I’d forgotten
about the intimidating train signs you can’t read, social
norms you try to adapt to but don’t quite get (like not
leaving a tip!) and of course the new take on teaching with all its
lingo, paperwork and co-worker drama.

I have to give kudos to new teachers who leave
everything to come to Barcelona, even for a short month to do the
course. How brave, how life-changing. The world
is a train waiting in the station; take advantage and get on
board.
